THE RED SEA

Or in Arabic El Bahar Ahmer is a narrow, long blue ribbon, lying between the African continent and the Arabian Peninsula. With a length of 2.000 kms and a depth of 2.359 mtrs it is a good playground for divers.

To the north the Red Sea is split into two arms by the Sinai Peninsula: on the right the Gulf of Aqaba and on the left the Gulf of Suez, which connects the Red Sea with the Mediterranean Sea by the Suez Canal,160 kms long.

To the south narrow straits are leading to the Indian Ocean: "Bab El Mandeb" or "Gate of Tears"”.

The depth at this place is only around 100 mtrs. Therefore very little water is exchanged between the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. The countries around the Red Sea are to the west Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Dshjibouti and Somalia. Saudi Arabia and Yemen share the eastern coast. To the north at the Gulf of Aqaba a small coastal area around Eilat belongs to Israel, another small part of the coast around Aqaba belongs to the Kingdom of Jordan.

The Red Sea is stretched out along a desert area. Wind and waves have formed coastal rocks to artistic sculptures. Apart from the Wadis and oases the coastal area is an abandoned, rocky, stony desert.

But the land is exactly the opposite of what you will find under water. Why Moses needed to split the Red Sea is still a scientific mystery and maybe could be due to a bad diving education in the past.

The sunset, a light warm sea breeze and the feeling of pure satisfaction from the neopren hood to the end of the fins is the completion of a happy dive day.

An old Bedouin once said, when his eyes travelled over the sea:
Those who wish to understand life on earth have to dive – above the surface you merely see the top of the tree of life.
